Alaska's Beauty
Two weeks before this picture was taken, my niece and I traveled the Gloenallen Highway from Anchorage on our way to Fairbanks. When we traveled it, there wasn't a drop of snow. Beautiful green trees lined the highway and we had the opportunity to see wildlife as we traveled.
Two weeks later, my niece went back home and I stayed up in Alaska waiting for my son and his bride to come. He had asked me to babysit his dogs and I was more than happy to do so. When they arrived I decided to spend a few days away and give them space. So I went back to Anchorage and decided to travel the Highway to see the most beautiful scenery. It was snowing when I left Anchorage heading towards Glenallen. This was one of the images I took along the way. So different in two weeks. The heaviness of the clouds and the snow bending the branches was amazing.
Just a footnote...on the way back from Glennallen I stayed in a fishing hotel in Paxton. Traveling from Paxton to Fairbanks, I was the only one I saw on the road (might of been the only nut on the road.) On a frozen river I saw what I thought was dogs far away. I took out my zoom lens and looked...it was a herd of caribou migrating on the river. I was so humbled!! Did I get a picture? Nope, I was so enthralled I totally forgot to take it.
It was taken with black and white film (I use to take a small point and shoot along with me to show me the colors of what I was taking with the black and white film) and printed on fiber based photo paper. That paper was treated with turpentine to accept the transparent oils. Painting was done with a small homemade q-tip and took approximately 40 hours.
