Soldier's Summit
Hand painted image of Soldier's Summit in the Yukon Territory.
Soldier's Summit
I was driving around Kluane Lake in the Yukon, heading to Alaska. As I was going towards Sheep Mountain I pulled over to rest. Another traveler, a man from Germany, also stopped and we started talking about the scenery. He explained to me that what I was looking at was called Soldier's Summit.. The history was that during World War II, the United States wanted a military supply route that would connect Alaska to the south. It took them a little over 8 months to build the supply road.
This was taken with black and white film and then printed on fiber based paper. I then treated the paper with turpentine in order to accept the application of transparent oils. I made homemade q-tips out of cotton balls and toothpicks. They had to be small.
The process was pressing color into the paper and then taking some of the color off. This was done in layers to create the different shades. This image took approximately 45 hours to complete.
I hope you enjoy it.
