A shipping vessel in the fog in Valdez, Alaska
Valdez
Using black and while film in my camera, I was taking pictures off of a wharf in Valdez Alaska. Suddenly a fog rolled in and I was trying to capture this shipping vessel before the fog totally engulfed it.
I developed and printed the film but it wasn't until I started the painting process that I realized that there was a mountain in the background. The painting process is treating the fiber based paper with turpentine to get it ready to receive the transparent oil paint. I would use toothpicks to roll my own cotton toothpicks which had to be small. The paint would be pushed in and then wiped off. Sometimes it would take layers and layers of pushing and pulling the paint to get the effect that you wanted. The average 8x10 image would take about 40 hours.
Alaska holds a special place in my heart. Three of my grandchildren were born there. I have always said that Alaska was God's canvas.
I hope you enjoy the painting and would love to hear from you.
